Teeth and Gum Cleaning

At SIA Dental, our dentists perform dental cleaning procedures ranging from a basic plaque and tartar removal, to a more comprehensive deep gum cleaning. Your treatment needs will depend on your current gum health, which will be assessed at your initial consultation.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is the inflammation of the gums which affects the gums and bone that supports your teeth. There are multiple stages of gum disease. The early signs of gum disease is known as gingivitis, characterised by redness, swelling and bleeding gums. As this progresses, gums will shrink and bone is destroyed, causing infection and loose teeth. This is known as periodontitis and can present in different levels of severity. The damage caused by periodontitis is irreversible, however, early treatment can prevent its progression.

Gum disease is caused by several factors including bacterial-related (due to plaque buildup from poor oral hygiene), smoking, age and genetics. At SIA Dental, we aim to treat the causative factors that contribute to your gum disease.

At SIA Dental, we include a gum health check as part of our general dental checkups. Depending on our findings, we will formulate a personalised treatment plan to treat your gum disease. In some cases, we may refer you to a Specialist Periodontist.

What does a scale and clean involve?

Our Services

The scale and clean procedure involves removing plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth and around your gums. Our dentists use an ultrasonic tool which creates high frequency vibrations in water to disperse plaque and tartar on teeth and around gums. Our dentists will then perform a thorough teeth polish to remove any surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. This procedure normally takes 20 to 30 minutes. Sometimes, multiple appointments are required to provide a thorough full mouth clean and our dentists will advise you prior to commencing treatment.
What does a deep gum clean involve?

A deep gum clean is required in cases of periodontitis where there is more extensive gum disease. In such cases, deep gum pockets form around your teeth and these act as reservoirs to harbour bacteria. As such, we utilise a selection of equipment to clean out these gum pocket. In some cases, we perform this deep gum clean under local anaesthetic over multiple visits to ensure a comfortable experience. Most patient experience minimal discomfort following treatment.
